Abstract
Tumor necrosis factor-¥á(TNF-¥á) is secreted by macrophage/monocyte in acute infection, sepsis and chronic disease. TNF-¥ápromotes catabolism and inflammatory process and is degraded at peripheral tissue rapidly and excreted about 10% in urine. To evaluate plasma levels of TNF-¥áin nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure, the plasma TNF-¥á levels were measured in 10 persons of control group, 15 patients with nephrotic syndrome and 16 patients with chronic renal failure who had not yet received renal replacement therapy. the results were as follows; 1. Plasma TNF-¥á levels in persons with chronic renal failure is significantly increased compared with the levels in normal persons and patients with nephrotic syndrome. 2. In patients with nephrotic syndrome, the levels of TNF-¥ádid not show any significant difference according to the underlying disease, but also is not significantly different from those of the normal persons. 3. In patients with nephrotic syndrome and chronic renal failure, the plasma levels of TNF-¥ádid not correlate with any other ematochemical data such as WBC, Hgb, BUN, Cr, Cholesteraol.
